Hawaii is blessed to have two saints come from these very lands: Saint Damien and Saint Marianne.
In a remote and isolated area of Molokai, the small peninsula of Kalaupapa juts out of the northern part of the island. It was in this isolated area that Saint Damien and Saint Marianne cared for those who were outcast due to their affliction with Hansen's disease (also known as leprosy). Once a place of desolation and devastation, Kalaupapa remains today as a reminder of a tragic part of Hawaii's history that turned into a message of a hope that these two saints gave to this place. |
